Buttons FAQ
Buttons FAQ
Everything you need to know about adding and managing interactive buttons in your Simplebooklet.
General Questions
What is a button?
A button is a visible, clickable element you place on any page of your Simplebooklet. Unlike hotspots, which are invisible clickable areas layered over your content, buttons appear as labelled UI elements that clearly signal an action to your audience — such as "Buy Now", "Contact Us", or "Download the Guide".
What button types are available?
Simplebooklet supports twelve button types:
- Website — link to any external URL
- Email — open a viewer's email app with your address pre-filled
- Phone — display your number in a popup with a tap-to-call option
- Address — open your location in Google Maps
- File Download — let viewers download a file directly from your booklet
- Caption — reveal a text overlay when clicked, with an optional link
- Image — open one or more images in a lightbox
- Video — play a video from YouTube, Vimeo, or an uploaded file
- Reserve — link to a booking or scheduling page
- Buy — link to a product or checkout page
- Share — open a sharing popup for social media, email, and more
- Custom — choose the action and write your own button label
What is the difference between a button and a hotspot?
Buttons are visible to your audience and display a label. Hotspots are invisible clickable areas placed over your existing content. Use buttons when you want a clear, visible call to action. Use hotspots when you want interactivity without adding a visible element to your design.
Can I add more than one button to a page?
Yes. You can add as many buttons as you need to a single page, and each button can be a different type.
Do viewers need an account or plugin to interact with buttons?
No. Buttons work in any modern browser with no account, plugin, or download required.
Adding & Editing Buttons
How do I add a button?
Open the Edit tab from your Dashboard, navigate to the page you want, click the Buttons button in the left-hand toolbar, and select your button type from the dropdown menu. Fill in the required details and click Save or Add.
How do I resize or reposition a button?
Click on the button on your page to open the Element Editor. From there you can drag it to reposition it and use the handles to resize it.
How do I edit a button I've already saved?
Navigate to the page containing the button in the Edit tab, click on the button, then click the small orange edit icon to reopen the button settings. Make your changes and click Save.
Website, Reserve & Buy Buttons
What are the options for how a linked page opens?
The Website, Reserve, and Buy buttons all offer three opening options:
- Open in Lightbox — the page loads in an overlay on top of your booklet
- Open in New Tab — the page opens in a new browser tab
- Open in Current Tab — the page replaces the current browser tab
What URL format should I use?
Enter the full URL including the protocol — for example https://www.yoursite.com. Partial URLs may not resolve correctly.
Email & Phone Buttons
What happens when a viewer clicks the email button?
Their default email app opens with your email address already filled in as the recipient. The viewer writes and sends their message from their own email account.
Can I pre-fill a message for the viewer on the email button?
Yes. When setting up your email button, there is a text box where you can add a default message that will appear pre-filled in the viewer's email compose window.
What happens when a viewer clicks the phone button?
A small popup appears displaying your phone number with a tap-to-call button. On mobile, tapping it dials the number directly. On desktop, it opens whatever calling app is set as default.
Address Button
What happens when a viewer clicks the address button?
Google Maps opens in a new browser tab showing the address you entered. On mobile, viewers can use it to get directions directly.
File Download Button
What file types can I offer for download?
You can upload and offer any common file type, including PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint files, and more.
Video Buttons
What video platforms can I link to?
You can embed videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and Google Drive using the Embed option by pasting the video URL.
Can I upload a video file directly?
Yes. Use the Upload option to upload a video directly from your device. Supported formats are MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV, and WEBM up to 50 MB.
What customisation options are available for uploaded videos?
- Autoplay on Open — plays the video automatically when clicked
- Muted Audio — plays without sound by default
- Hide Video Playbar — removes the video controls from view
- Loop Video — plays the video on repeat
Image & Caption Buttons
Can I add multiple images to a single image button?
Yes. You can upload multiple images to one image button and they will display as a browsable gallery in the lightbox.
Can I add a caption to an image button?
Yes. When setting up your image button, there is an optional caption field where you can add context or a description for your viewers.
What does the caption button do?
When clicked, it reveals a text overlay displaying the caption text you entered. You can also add an optional link URL so the caption links through to an external page.
Share Button
What sharing options does the share button give viewers?
When clicked, a popup appears with options to share your booklet across social media platforms, via email, and more.
Custom Button
What makes the custom button different from the other button types?
The Custom Button lets you choose from a range of actions and write your own button label. This means you can use language that fits your brand and campaign — such as "Start Your Free Trial", "Get the Report", or "Book a Demo" — rather than a pre-set label.
What actions can I assign to a custom button?
You can assign any of the standard button actions — including linking to a website, sending an email, downloading a file, and more — while setting a completely custom label for the button text.
How Buttons Support the Reader's Journey
Buttons have an impact across every stage of the Reader's Journey. In the Awareness stage, a Share button helps extend your content's reach to new audiences. In the Attention stage, Video and Image buttons reward curiosity with richer content. In the Immersion stage, Caption and File Download buttons give readers access to deeper context and supporting materials. And in the Action stage, Website, Email, Phone, Reserve, Buy, and Custom buttons remove every remaining barrier between interest and response — making it as easy as possible for your audience to take the next step.
