How to Keep Your QR Code Active
Once your QR code is in the wild — printed on materials, shared in emails, or embedded in presentations — the last thing you want is for it to stop working. This article explains what keeps a QR code active and how to avoid breaking it.
How Your QR Code Works
Your QR code is tied to your booklet's slug — the unique part of the URL that identifies your booklet. For example, in simplebooklet.com/yourbookletname, the slug is yourbookletname.
As long as your slug stays the same, your QR code will always work — no matter how many times you update the content inside your booklet.
What Breaks a QR Code
Changing your slug breaks your QR code because the URL it points to no longer exists. This can happen if you rename your booklet URL or create a new booklet instead of updating the existing one.
How to Update Your Content Without Breaking Your QR Code
Use the Replace feature whenever you need to update your booklet content. This swaps out the file while keeping your slug, URL, and QR code completely intact.
Dashboard → Find your booklet → Replace → Upload your updated PDF
What to Do If Your QR Code Has Already Stopped Working
Option 1 — Restore your original slug
If the slug was changed, you may be able to restore it.
Dashboard → Share → Link Manager → pencil icon beside the URL field → type your original slug → Save
Test the QR code once it's saved.
Option 2 — Generate a new QR code
If you can't restore the original slug, generate a new QR code for the updated URL and replace it in your materials.
Dashboard → Share → QR Code → Download
Using a Third-Party QR Code (Bitly or Similar)
If you generated your QR code through a service like Bitly, it points to the Bitly link rather than directly to your Simplebooklet slug. This means you can update where the link redirects without replacing the QR code itself.
To point your Bitly QR code to a new or updated booklet, log into Bitly, find the link attached to your QR code, and update the destination URL. Your existing QR code will redirect automatically. This is a useful approach if you regularly update your content and want full control over where your QR code points.
